Living a life of purpose

There are three questions to ask yourself if you want to become the hero of your life: have I contributed something meaningful?, am I a good person?, and who did I love, and who loved me? When we have become older and reflect upon our lives, these three questions will be the most important to answer. In this post I would like to focus on the first one.

To contribute something meaningful to the world, we must discover what is our calling in life, our mission. We must identify our gifts and talents, those things that are easy for us to do even though they are not the same for others. We can ask our family and friends to help us identify them, and we would be surprised to find some things in common in their answers.  Moreover, we can ponder what are the activities we enjoy the most; those that, when we are working on them, we lose sight of the time, our need for resting, or even we do not think on eating or doing something else. It is what is called to be in the flow. It is something that bring us great joy, and we do not mind to invest a great deal of time and effort to master it. We want to become the best at it, and we are decided to put our mind and soul to reach our goal.

If we are able to find the intersection between our God-given gifts and our most joyful activity, we are near to find our calling in life. It will inspire us to serve others, to satisfy a deep existing need, something that we cannot resist and want to work towards its improvement. There must be something that must call to our hearts for action, something we feel we can help to solve using our gifts and talents.

If we have not identified our gifts and talents, we should start working on it as soon as possible to live a life of purpose and happiness, and to serve and bless others’ lives.

Overcoming Challenges

Sister Patricia Holland taught us: “You have so much personal potential, and this is the greatest place in the entire world to develop it. This  is  the time and this  is  the place!” These were inspiring words to me at this moment since I am trying to discover my potential, my calling, my mission in life. I know about my talents, my gifts, and things I enjoy doing. However, I cannot link them to an entrepreneurial activity. I do not realize how to connect my strengths and the stuff I can do better than other to a venture who can rewarding me for doing what I love. I am researching the job market to get some ideas to guide me in my searching for my dreamed job or business. And as she pointed, BYU-Idaho is the best place to study and to acquire the knowledge we need to be well prepared for nowadays market employment. In the chapter 5 form the book “A Field Guide for the Hero’s Journey” (Sandefer, et al. 2012) we learned that in our journey towards becoming a...

The Abillity of Executing

Every time I start a course that requires analyzing my skills and talents I face a great challenge. I am still trying to realize which star I should follow or which entrepreneurial path I should run into. It took half of my life to be able to identify my gifts and talents, but I do not know how I can make a business out of them. However, this week’s readings taught me something I will treasure my whole life. Reading “A message to García” from the Acton Foundation, I discovered I have the very rear talent or skill of executing. I am the kind of person who enjoys having things done without the necessity of being reminded about them. I know I have a task to fulfill, and then I start working on it until I complete it. I love being proactive and solving the questions that probably arise when you are assigned a certain task. I feel confident and my self-esteem grows when my superiors trust me to do something because I put my heart on to not discourage them. As an employee, I have m...

Creating a Life of Meaning

I have been a dreamer my whole life. I still have big dreams even though I lack the confidence to think I can achieve them. However, there are some aspects of my personality that helped me reach some of my goals. Perseverance, faith, clear objectives, writing my goals down every year, tenacity, and a kind of OCD which never allows me to rest till the work is done. It does not mean that I had not to break some walls along the path or take some time to rest and to redirect my course. It means that, no matter what occurs in my life, I have my dreams clear and do not abandon them. Though some of them could change as we get older and mature, others remain fixed and are our stars in our lives. First of all, I always wanted to get a degree. I grow up in a very difficult context, being neglected by my parents, in charge of my siblings, doing everything by myself. At age 15 I left high school to work, and at age 16 I started living on my own. At the moment, the only aim for me was to be...
